NATIONAL SECURITY POLICY:

I support the invaluable work of our brave Iowa men and women in uniform who are currently deployed in the ongoing military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world. All Iowans are deeply grateful for their service and sacrifices.

In addition to supporting our key allies in Southwest Asia, I support prudent steps to defeat Al Qaeda and stabilize Afghanistan and Pakistan. I also support reducing taxpayer expenditures in Iraq when our President and military leadership determine appropriate changes in military strategy are warranted.

Keeping America safe also demands that we promote stability throughout the world with pragmatism. It is in our best interests both economically and from a security standpoint to forestall the emergence of failed states and threat multipliers. That’s why I support expanding global economic development and diplomatic assistance, and following the Pentagon’s lead in addressing the climate change threat.

I also view restoring America’s economic strength as a core feature of a serious national security policy. Engaging with friendly emerging powers, protecting our borders and leveraging Iowa’s existing strengths in home grown energy are essential features of the modern and comprehensive national security policy I support.
